Stewards of Quality and Safety

The long-term safety and reliability of our products is Imara’s paramount consideration. Our manufacturing processes, facilities, high-end automated equipment, and employee training reflect this commitment to quality and safety.

Imara is nearing completion of ISO 9001 certification. Our cell, battery pack, and electrode products undergo rigorous UN/UL testing. We also expose our products to our own proprietary safety and reliability test regimes; subjected to high temperatures, physical abuse, and destructive and non-destructive testing, Imara’s products must prove their mettle before shipping to customers

To deliver a safe battery system, four critical elements must be properly managed: materials, cell design, pack design, and manufacturing processes.

Material Characteristics
Different blends of li-ion chemistry have varying responses to high temperatures and physical disruptions. Imara technology can be adapted to use the safest materials available. Our mixed-metal oxide chemistry sustains stability under heat better than the more common lithium-cobalt oxide found in cell phones and laptops.

Cell Design
Electrolyte salts, which are flammable, are an intrinsic part of all high-volume li-ion cells. Imara designs cells to safeguard against overheating and short circuits. We incorporate thermal modeling and empirical results into the cell design’s short circuit protection.

Pack Design
Battery management systems that protect against overcharging and short circuits are crucial safety features at the pack level. Packs from Imara employ cell balancing within modules, and optimize charging and discharging across modules in larger packs.

Manufacturing Processes
Imara has established strict quality and cleanliness controls in our manufacturing process—the key to cell safety from the inside out. Coating and cell assembly are carried out in controlled environments. We follow a carefully standardized process for materials approval. We employ Six Sigma techniques and statistical process controls to minimize variation throughout our production processes.

Consumers buy 70 million vehicles a year—and counting. If the Chevy Volt, using type-18650 batteries, sells only 100,000 units a year, the Volt alone will consume 30% of present worldwide battery capacity. Learn More >
